Challenge for 2009

We come from a very intelligent family. I think sometimes the frustrations we face in life come from boredom and a lack of intellectual challenge in our lives.

So here is my challenge to each of us this year: Pick a subject and focus on mastering it.

(I'm still working on collage and altered books in my art life and I also plan to attack the Russians in my reading - I'm starting with War and Peace. Spiritually, I am looking to attack the writings of Isaiah. They totally mystify me - no, that's not accurate, they CONFUSE ME and I just don't get them ! ! !)

SO : What talent will you work to improve?

What book will you read next?

What subject will you conquer?

Just as a word of advice, War and Peace is not a quick starter. It's a little hard to get into.

If you are interested in other recommendations on Russian literature, Laura is our family expert. She took a Russian lit class in college, and I've read some of them as well. I enjoyed Crime and Punishment, and I'm currently enjoying Brothers Karamazov. After I finish Brother's Karamazov, I think I'm going to read Les Mis, and the count of Monte Kristo.

Oh, and I forgot, my goal this year is not really reading, but painting. I used all my birthday money on canvases, paints, brushes- so I would feel a push start to get going... my goal is to work on a new canvas each month. I don't know if that's doable, but I think it will work.

Also, I'll be trying to do Yoga at least once a week. I think it really helped me to get rid of stress and feel a lot more relaxed and in control of my emotions whenever I was practicing yoga 2-3 times a week.

I second Jed--I wouldn't start with War and Peace. I'd start with Anna K or with anything by Dostyeske (sp) before I struggled through War and Peace. Also some of the Russian poets are wonderful. And Puskin.

My big intent this year is to take more responsibility for my own actions in my own life--from food, chores, etc. The biggest application is that I want to be more organized in the first place so that I don't spend so much time looking for things.

Creatively, I want to move forward with painting silk as art, not just as clothing.

And I want to get more deeply involved in vegetable gardening and landscaping for drought conditions, since that's what we will have.

And Jed, your painting goal sounds wonderful. Good luck!

Love, Sandra

I am going to work on quilting and scrapbooking more this year. I really want to spend some quality time doing projects because I want to, and because I like to, not because of any other reasons.

I don't know what I want to read, but I'm working on learning more about my animals, and trying to be a good goat mama. I think I'm going to work this year on learning how to make all dairy products out of goat milk, so that I can make whatever I want out of goat products.

So I guess I'm working on more hands on things. I should think of something to read and study mentally too. Hmmm, I'll have to give that some thought.

Oh boy.....

Well I'll be honest - reading for me has to be for FUN - and FUN only. I love reading, but I'm all about escape litature.

And I have tried to avoid New Years resolutions all together. I NEED to get a handle on just too many things right now - and to sit down and put together an organized list - might just push me over the edge :)

But the ones listed sound great. And really - once I get Gabe back in preschool (thank goodness that starts again this week) I might wrap my brain around some resolutions.

I'm going to work on my Chess playing skills.

Actually, my big goal is to lose weight and get back in shape this year. Yes, not very orginal, but I need to do it.
